And then there's Guild Wars II: yes, you have to buy the game, but there's no monthly fee, and you're NOT gimped for not subscribing. Subscriptions aren't even an option. You only get five character slots for free, but that's more than most non-altaholics will need (yes, I've purchased a couple extra character slots).

WoW's a lot of fun, and I miss it sometimes, but I don't miss the monthly fee. I'll probably jump on a lifetime sub if they ever offer it, but until then my sporadically-playing self is happy without the recurring charge.

You can group with friends on other servers for PvE and some PvP, but I'm on Devona's Rest if you want to get together on the World-vs-World battleground.

<edit>

Good news for craftaholics: crafting materials have their own slots in the "collections" part of the shared bank, you can deposit collection items (including crafting mats) from anywhere in the world, and crafting stations automatically use the materials from your collections. Finally got more than a stack of 250 copper ore, and the excess is taking up space in your pack? Have an alt smelt your ore into bars and re-deposit them into the "copper bar" slot of your collection. You can also access the auction house from anywhere, so you could just sell your excess (although you still need to go to town to pick up cash from sales or get an item you bought).

Also, everything about the game encourages you to help other people and adventure together. Crafting nodes are per-player, so it doesn't matter if someone harvests it while you're fighting off a mob that jumped you: it's still there for you. Worried about some pinhead killing the named mob that spawned for your quest (they call them events)? Not only do you get credit if he kills it, but he automatically gets the event (quest) when he gets near it, and you both get the reward.

As cool as the game is, though, I still don't get on much, and about none at all during the week. I'd be overjoyed to help out and show people around on a weekend, though. :D

fwiw, I have the NETGEAR WNDR4500, and I've been very happy with it.

Resistance is futile. G'head, buy them. Once you've got the games, you're not going to want to take the time away from the keyboard to cook and eat anyhow, so you won't mind that all you can afford now is ramen. Works for me. :D

Public General Discussion / New Fishing Skill
September 05, 2012, 10:36:58 AM
They stealth-buffed fishing in 5.0.4, but most people don't know it.  I found out by accident today, when I added the fishing icon to an action bar on an alt spec that didn't have it yet.

If you click the fishing icon in your action bar and don't get the channeling bar for "casting" fishing, then you've still got the old fishing skill on your bar.  Drag the fishing icon from the profession tab of you spellbook to you action bar to get the new one.

The new fishing skill gives you back your channeling bar, which you may or may not care about, but it also lets you fish without swapping out your weapon for a fishing pole.  You'll auto-equip a crappy twig pole and have an effective fishing skill of 1, but you'll keep your weapon ready in case you're attacked.  Since you only need a fishing skill of 1 to fish from pools, I'm going to be using the new button a LOT as my alts go through Northrend to try to snag me a turtle mount.  :)

Public General Discussion / Spirit of Harmony
August 26, 2012, 08:37:41 AM
Trash in MoP is going to drop Motes of Harmony, ten Motes of Harmony will combine into a Spirit of Harmony, and Spirit of Harmony is going to be the new Chaos Orb:  crafters will need them for the better recipes, they'll initially be bind-on-pickup, but they'll probably be tradeable in a later patch.

DON'T VENDOR YOUR SPIRITS OF HARMONY!

Just keep combining your motes and saving stacks of SoH, and you'll be ready to make a bundle off of them on the AH once they're tradeable.  Alternatively, you can hand them to a guild crafter and get some of that better gear made for yourself.

Public General Discussion / 5.0.4 Comes 28 August
August 17, 2012, 08:43:30 AM
Blue post here:  http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/6308782635

This will implement the new talent & specialization system, the new glyph system and new glyphs, and the new "I no longer have to buy new spells from the trainer when I'm levelling alts" system.  It may or may not implement account-wide companion pets and mounts, scenarios, and the new pokémon system.

I'm pretty stoked.  :D

Public General Discussion / Mists of Rune Factory?
July 31, 2012, 08:53:44 PM
So, I'm reading some information about the Tillers and their starting quests, and darned if it doesn't sound a LOT like Rune Factory (the Harvest Moon spin-off where you actually crafted weapons and armor and headed into dungeons to go kill stuff).  I LOVED Rune Factory.  I'm really stoked about this.  It appears that you can't get started on Tillers faction until you're 90, though, so my Pandaren and Monk alts are just going to have to wait while Herbert pushes on to the new level cap.  :D

Plants vs Zombies?  Pokémon?  Rune Factory?  What else are they planning?  Are they going to port ALL of my favorite games into WoW?  Sweet!  :D

I've heard a lot of stuff saying that you will get one additional character slot per realm if you buy MoP, but I haven't found a single blue post confirming it.  The closest I've found is http://wow.joystiq.com/2012/03/19/mists-of-pandaria-yes-you-get-another-character-slot/.

I've also heard rumors that they're doing away with the per-server limit altogether, and other rumors that you can pay cash for additional character slots, but these rumors are less well substantiated than the "one extra slot if you buy MoP".

I really hope that they give us more than one additional slot.  I've already got ten toons (one of each class), I'd like to have a monk, I'd like to have a Pandaren, and I DON'T want a Pandaren monk.  If they only give us one additional slot, I might delete one of the two toons I use to duo with my each of my sons after I level a Pandaren high-enough to take its place, and then roll a non-Pandaren monk.  If they don't give us an extra character slot at all, then I'll just have to live without a monk.

Ideally, they'll give me a way to get two more slots on my account, even if I have to pay for them, and I'll roll a trollette monk and a Pandaren hunter (since my hunter that duos with my nine-year-old will probabably never get to 40).

I'm pretty sure that everyone already knows this, but Blizzard says that they're releasing Mists of Pandaria on 25 September, and you can pre-order now.

Grats!  Collecting awesome pets is probably the best argument I've heard for levelling my hunter alt.

10 character slots per server, 10 character classes.  Coincidence?  I think not...

...but now they're adding an 11th class.  I want to try out monk, I don't want to delete any of my Horde toons on Durotan, and I don't want my monk to be over on the Alliance alt server.  Anyone heard if they're going to let you roll an 11th toon on a server, or am I just going to be all whiny over here?

They made YouTube take it down for copyright violation.  :/

I want another toon slot! or 2 or 3!
Oh, HELL yes!  I've got all ten of my slots on our server filled up with one of every class as it is; I do NOT want to have to delete a toon to make room for a Pandaren monk.  EQ2 will let you buy additional character slots with real-world money.  Even if Blizzard charges for another slot, I'd pay to get it.
