Attention Computer Nerds: HELP!

I've run into a minor problem that I just can't seem to rectify:

When I open My Computer, everything USED to be displayed under separate headings such as "Devices with Removable Storage" "Hard Drives", etc..  Now they're all just in one big group.  I've tried looking for a way to restore it to the way it was (I found it handy), but so far I'm having no luck.  Either it's borked and I'm going to have to find a registry hack to fix it or I'm overlooking something.  Any ideas?

For XP:
With the My Computer window open, click on View | Details. If you had List selected, everything is in one group as you described.

I've always had it set as Tiles.  And it's still at Tiles now.  Still the same thing as described above:  Everything is lumped together instead of in separate categories/groups.

If I remember correctly I had this same problem a while ago and had to fix it with some sort of registry change, but I'll be damned if I can remember it now.  Google search has been fruitless.

EDIT:  I fixed it, kinda.  I went to View --> Sort --->  In Groups and then changed it to sort by Type and that's sort of what it used to look like, but not exactly.  In either event it was a minor issue at best, but I do wonder what happened to change it.  Guess I'll be running a virus/malware scan while I'm at class.  What's also strange is that when I tried exact same thing last night it gave me a completely different result.  Perhaps I just needed a reboot.
