This game is free to play and is alot of fun. I really don't like the 3rd person point of view, but you do get used to it. Try it out. I'm an old-school Battlefield fan, especially Desert Combat. This will do for me untill Battlefield 1943 gets released in September.

I just installed Allied Intent Extended 2.0 for Battlefield 2 again to mess around on.

It's a great mod for the game, plenty of maps to play on with the Imtheheadhunter map pack.

AIX is a single player mod that changes around the weapons you play with, makes the game much more fun on single player. Although sometimes it's not as intense as the online play it sure did make me enjoy the game more on single player.

You can command squads to attack / defend and they actually listen to you. Or you can create a squad and let the computer be the commander, now this has it's ups and downs......the bastard will continue to give you orders. Which is just as good as it is bad because he'll let you know which flags are about to be attacked by the enemy. He will also follow your command on artillery / supplies / vehicle drop as well as UAV. (artillery if it hasn't already been used by him to defend a flag that is, which is just as bad as it is good because he will drop it around you if the flag is being attacked and you arrive). This is also bad because unless you destroy enemy artillery, he will drop it on you anytime you go to take a flag.

I was in the beta for Heroes.  It's a decent game considering it's free, and I, too, am a fan of the Battlefield series beginning with 1942 (looking forward to the forthcoming 1943), but after release I kind of lost interest in it.  I'll probably revisit it in a few months to see what's changed/been added, but for now my commando, gunner and soldier are all mothballed.
